SOFTBALL / NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS : UCLA Finally Hits and Wins, 1-0

Top-ranked UCLA scored in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday night to defeat Florida State, 1-0, in the first game of the rain-plagued College World Series at Oklahoma City.

UCLA, seeking a fourth consecutive NCAA title, was held hitless by Florida State’s Christy Larsen until Nicole Victoria singled with one out in the sixth inning.

With one out in the seventh, Yvonne Gutierrez singled to right. Missy Phillips then tripled to left-center to drive in Gutierrez with the run that improved UCLA’s record to 53-5.

Heather Compton pitched a four-hitter to improve her record to 19-3. Larsen is 32-6. The Seminoles are 61-11.
