SANTA ANA : Historic Home Tour Offered Next Week

Share

The Wilshire Square neighborhood is offering a tour of its historic homes next weekend.

Most of the homes in Wilshire Square were built from 1912 to 1950. Many are characterized by distinctive, large windows, breakfast rooms, garages that are separate from the houses and large yards with fruit trees.

The six homes featured on the tour were built in 1920-30 and represent several architectural styles, including California bungalow, Tudor, Mediterranean and Renaissance revival.

The neighborhood is made up of 650 homes and is bordered by McFadden and Edinger avenues and Flower and Main streets, just blocks from downtown Santa Ana.

As in previous years, the self-guided walking tour will also feature a display of vintage automobiles. For the first time, the two-day event will also include a separate garden tour and spotlight the artworks of some of its residents.

Gidde Wachman, tour chairman, said: “We have such a large number of artists and creative (people) living in our neighborhood, we wanted to showcase their talent in addition to the architecture of our community.

“The unique charm of Wilshire Square is more than just the houses that we live in,” he said. “It’s the people that really give this neighborhood its character.”

The tour will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets--which include admission, the tour, refreshments and door prizes--are $8 on the day of the event, $7 in advance and $6 for seniors 55 years and older. For information, call (714) 547-7317.
