John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl, who skipped the French Open last year, drew tough opening-round opponents Friday for the Grand Slam event.

McEnroe, playing the French Open for the first time since 1988, will meet 17th-ranked Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union, the highest-ranked unseeded player in the tournament.

Lendl will open his bid for a fourth French Open title against Martin Jaite of Argentina.

In the women’s field, defending champion Monica Seles will play Czechoslovakia’s Radka Zrubakova, Steffi Graf will face Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario drew American Lori McNeil in the opening round.

Despite a loss by Stefan Edberg, Sweden qualified for the final of the World Team Cup in a match against the Soviet Union at Duesseldorf, Germany.

Edberg, playing with a strained right thigh, lost to Andrei Cherkasov, 6-4, 6-1. Magnus Gustafsson gave Sweden the only victory it needed to qualify for the final, 6-2, 6-2, over Alexander Volkov.
