VILLA PARK : Street by Any Other Name Causes Fuss

Share

It sounds almost like a comedy movie title: “A Street Called Wanda.”

But efforts to change the name of a street on which no one lives has generated more dissension than laughs.

At the center of this small drama is Wanda Road--known as “little” Wanda Road to locals. It is a half-mile street that runs parallel to the four-lane street Wanda Road in Orange that is a short distance to the west.

The two streets, separated by a wall and a parkway, often cause confusion when nearby residents give directions to their houses. So, at a February meeting, the City Council decided to change Little Wanda Road to Fitschen Ranch Road after a family that has owned land there since the 1930s.

Since then, some residents said they want to choose what new name, if any, is to be adopted.

The council is expected to decide today which name will be final.
