Downey : Neighborhood Petitions for Freeway Sound Wall Funds

Share

About 100 residents living in an eastern corner of Downey against the Santa Ana Freeway have petitioned the city to ensure that a sound wall will be built along the busy roadway in the next several years.

The Downey City Council on Tuesday said it would consider spending $550,000 in the next four years to build the wall.

The neighborhood is bounded by the I-5 Freeway, Florence Avenue, Cecilia Street and Studebaker Road. A chain-link fence separates the homes from the freeway.

The California Department of Transportation is scheduled to build a sound wall there in 1995, but the residents fear that funding may be lost to state budget cuts.

The proposal by council members Barbara J. Hayden and Robert Brazelton to allocate the $550,000 will be discussed at a public hearing June 11.
