CSULB to Lose 755 Jobs; Program Cutbacks Urged
Cal State Long Beach officials announced Thursday that they would either lay off or not re-hire 506 full- and part-time lecturers and 249 staff members--most by July 1--as part of a $14-million cut forced by reductions in the state budget.
In addition, a university task force recommended drastic trims in a number of programs, including the eventual elimination or downgrading of football and gradual phasing-out of the University Art Museum.
“It’s really very serious,” CSULB President Curtis L. McCray said. “I think we’re watching a transformation in public higher education in California as we know it.” Among other things, he said, the layoffs and reductions will result in the elimination of as many as 1,000 classes and an estimated 3,000 of the university’s 34,000 students next fall.
