Bail Denied to Arce in Camarena Murder Case
- Share via
A Los Angeles federal court judge on Friday denied a request for bail by a wealthy Mexican businessman awaiting retrial in the 1985 torture and murder of U.S. drug agent Enrique Camarena.
U.S. District Judge Edward Rafeedie turned down the bail request for Ruben Zuno Arce, 67, saying he was unconvinced that Zuno would not try to leave the country before the retrial, which is to begin July 23.
Zuno, the brother-in-law of former Mexican President Louis Echeverria, has been in federal prison since his arrest in Texas two years ago. On May 10, Rafeedie threw out the conspiracy conviction of Zuno and ordered the new trial, ruling that prosecutors had misstated testimony from a key witness during the lengthy trial last summer. Three other men have been sentenced in connection with the drug agent’s murder.
