TAPE GAP: New Watergate tapes were released Tuesday (A1) but don’t expect to find them at the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace in Yorba Linda. . . . Library officials feel there is nothing of “particular value” in the latest batch of tapes and there will be no effort to acquire them, said spokesman Kevin Cartwright. He noted that the library already features “the most important tape, the so-called smoking gun,” which recorded a devastating 1972 conversation in which Nixon approves a plan to warn the FBI to halt its Watergate probe. The library’s version of that tape is heavily edited, however.
