Rigo Beltran, a former Point Loma High standout now playing for Wyoming, was named to the NCAA Division I All-America third team. Beltran, a senior utility man, graduated from Point Loma in 1987.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers announced the signing of four free agents, including ex-Seattle Seahawk punter Ruben Rodriguez.

The other three players were from the World League of American Football: linebacker Wayne Dickson (Orlando), kicker Tom Whelihan (Frankfurt) and tackle Mike Withycombe (Orlando).

Whelihan and Withycombe attended the Chargers’ 1990 training camp. Withycombe briefly was on the Charger roster, but did not play. Rodriguez played for Seattle for three seasons before being released before the 1990 season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Kieishsha Garnes, a San Diego State junior, has been named one of 15 finalists for the 1991 USA World University Games basketball team.

Trials were conducted May 30-June 1 in Colorado Springs. A minicamp, which began Monday, will continue through June 6, during which time coaches will decide on the official 12-member team.

Garnes, from Brooklyn, N.Y., averaged 23.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and was selected WAC player of the year.

The World University Games will be conducted July 15-24 in Sheffield, England.
