BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Valenzuela to Start Against Tigers

Fernando Valenzuela signed a major league contract with the Angels Tuesday and will make his Angel debut Friday night at Anaheim Stadium against the Detroit Tigers.

Valenzuela has not yet been placed on the 25-man roster, but an Angel spokesman said a move would be made Friday to open a spot.

In preparation for inserting Valenzuela into the pitching rotation, the Angels optioned fifth starter Scott Lewis to triple-A Edmonton. They also recalled right-hander Joe Grahe from Edmonton; and Manager Doug Rader said Grahe will be used in long relief.

Also on Tuesday, Junior Felix was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right calf muscle and outfielder Ruben Amaro was recalled from Edmonton.

“I’m looking forward to being part of the team. I hope I can do something for them,” Valenzuela said. “I know it’s going to be a great team.”

Valenzuela’s contract is for one year plus an option year and isn’t heavily enhanced by incentive clauses, according to Dan O’Brien, Angel senior vice president.

“We expect a fifth starter who can do what the other four, five have been doing--that is, win,” O’Brien said.

Lewis was 1-5 in nine starts and 10 appearances. Grahe was 7-3 with a 4.45 earned-run average in 10 starts with Edmonton. Amaro, who was a nonroster player in training camp, led Edmonton with a .370 batting average in 48 games.

Mark Langston, the Angels’ scheduled starter Thursday, suffered a sprained ankle during batting practice Tuesday. X-rays were negative and his status was listed as day to day. . . . Red Sox left-hander Matt Young will miss his scheduled start tonight because of stiffness in his pitching shoulder. Mike Gardiner will replace him.
