Azusa : Waste-by-Rail Station Plan
The city’s dump may turn into a waste-by-rail transfer station by 1993, according to a presentation by landfill officials at Monday’s council meeting.
After the update by the Azusa Land Reclamation Co., the council voted 3 to 2 to urge the state to expedite a court-ordered environmental impact report on the effects of the landfill expansion on the San Gabriel Valley water basin.
After losing a lengthy court battle that ended earlier this year, the landfill company was required to do environmental studies before its application to reopen could be considered by state water officials.
But landfill official Les Bittenson said the transfer station would be built whether or not state water authorities approve expansion of the dump, which sits on a huge aquifer that supplies 90% of the water used by San Gabriel Valley residents.
Mayor Eugene F. Moses and Councilman Stephen J. Alexander, who voted against the measure said they would rather condemn the landfill and operate it as a city-run transfer station without any expansion.
