Hybrid Sound : Beat Farmers from San Diego combine musical styles for a raucous show.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

San Diego’s Beat Farmers play a raucous mix of country, blues and rock with not a lot of slow ones--even Farmer John and his pigs would dance.

“We all used to be in different groups here in San Diego, but we all knew each other,” said guitarist Jerry Raney in a recent telephone interview.

“Country Dick,” he said, referring to drummer and occasional singer Country Dick Montana, “was in Country Dick and the Snuggle Bunnies, sort of a reckless Western band. We decided that maybe a mobile pulsating pleasure unit of a band might be a good plan. So we said ‘Yeah, let’s give it a try.’ Then we recruited Buddy Blue and Rolle Love who were in a band doing all original rockabilly. I guess we play some kind of pseudo-rock--I dunno. Pseudo-ego sex rock.”

The Beat Farmers play around San Diego at least once a month either under that or innumerable other names, such as the Incredible Hayseeds. And before that, Raney used to play for the Coasters, the Drifters and other oldies acts on that ubiquitous “Glad-to-be- Working Tour.”

“Playing with those old guys was pretty cool,” said Raney. “But most of those guys had lost their original lust to rock ‘n’ roll. It was just a show to get some dough.”

Then there was the totally whacked out Pleasure Barons tour a few years ago featuring a bunch of guys from a bunch of bands, including Joey Harris and Montana from the Beat Farmers, Dave Alvin of X and Mojo Nixon.

At the Santa Barbara show, Montana sang his Beat Farmers “psycho-billy” signature tune “Happy Boy,” which features the refrain “hubba, hubba, hubba, hubba, hubba.” It sounds even stranger than it reads.

“I could have gone on that tour, but I didn’t want to. There were so many people in the band, I couldn’t make any money. I’ve got a couple of kids now,” said Raney.

The performance Friday will be the Beat Farmers’ second coming to the Ventura Theatre. They also played once at UC Santa Barbara a few years ago. Perhaps the theater is booking Raging Arb as the opening act because it is one of the best-drawing local bands, while the headliners remain something of an unknown quantity in this county.

“This should be a fun one,” said Raney, “because we’re crazy. Sometime, we’d like to open for Bob Dylan or Neil Young, and probably not Tears For Fears or Morrissey--but this one sounds good to me.”

And if things don’t quite pan out with Dylan or Young’s people, what’s next on the agenda?

“We’re working on some new material, so I guess we’ve got to actually make another album,” said Raney. “We’ve got to make another tape, fight with the record company--it’ll probably be another year or so.”

Of course, if the music thing doesn’t work out, there’s always the Beat Farmers Almanac. The almanac has been published every year since 1983 and offers advice that would make Dear Abby cringe. If you’re a prude, you might want to stay away.

One of the Tips for Men is “Deny everything. If that doesn’t work, blame it on the booze or amnesia. If you’re still in trouble, claim that the bikers made you do it.” One of the Tips for Women is “Don’t touch anything unless you’ve seen it in the light first.” Words to live by.
