Gay and Lesbian Center Art Sale Nets $151,000

* Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center will receive $151,000, net proceeds from OUT Auction, the center’s May 3-5 art exhibit and sale. The event, attended by more than 5,000 people, was produced by Strub Media Group. Some of the proceeds will go to the Woman’s Building and the National Fund for Lesbian and Gay Artists.

* Child Guidance Center (Santa Ana), Bienvenidos Children’s Shelter (West Covina), Bienvenidos In-Home Support Project (East Los Angeles) and El Centro De Amistad (Canoga Park), all shelters that provide aid to child-abuse victims, will share almost $200,000 raised by television station KVEA’s May 29 “De Mi Corazon” telethon. Sponsors were El Pollo Loco, McDonald’s, Pacific Bell Corporate, Pacific Bell Directory, Zest Soap, Beneficial Management, Los Defensores, Avon, Pepsico, Casanova-Pendril and Dearden’s.

* UCLA School of Medicine’s pediatric neurological research group received $250,000, net proceeds from a April 28 garden luncheon attended by 300 guests at a private residence. The event was organized by Hendel Schwartz, president and founder of Operation Brainchild, a support group that raises funds for pediatric neurological research.

* National Parkinson Foundation will receive $90,000, net proceeds from the June 2 Jim Backus Memorial Celebrity Art Show and Silent Auction held at Phyllis Diller’s home. Proceeds will be used for research. Phyllis Diller and Henny Backus were chairs.

* Mobility Opportunities Via Education received more than $60,000, net proceeds of a fund-raiser May 15 at the Roxbury Restaurant, West Hollywood. MOVE, a McBride School program, helps students with severe disabilities become mobile. The event was hosted by Al and Jessica Corley.

* Food Partnership, Child and Family Services, Centinela Hospital Foundation, California School of Professional Psychology, Ocean Park Community Center, L.A. Educational Partnership and other social service organizations will share more than $367,000 in grants from California Community Foundation.

* More than 29 South Bay philanthropies and Peninsula High School Senior Scholarships will reap benefits of $130,000 netted April 13 by the Palos Verdes Junior Women’s Club. The “Join Hands and Hearts” auction event was chaired by Jerrie Short. Nancy Lovell is club president.

* Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ newly opened Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills received a $25,000 contribution to its endowment campaign from the Alfred J. Hitchcock Foundation.

* Challengers Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles received $25,000 from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation to support the construction of a new club facility. Challengers was founded in 1968 to provide inner-city youth with alternatives to crime and gang-related activities.

* University of Judaism netted more than $125,000 at its May 5 concert starring Joel Grey. Proceeds will be used for educational and scholarship programs at the university.

* University Art Museum at Cal State Long Beach received the first exhibition development award offered by Knight Foundation (through American Federation of Arts) for $193,000. The funding is for the development of the exhibit “Machine Language: Art in the Information Age.”

* Clinica Para Las Americas announced grants totaling $198,000 from Anita and Stanley Hirsh, the California Primary Health Care Services Branch, United Way, Kaiser Permanente, Arco Foundation, Thomas and Mery Gray, Permanent Charities Committee and Xerox Corp. The clinic at 3rd and Alvarado provides free health care to area residents.

* Operation Exodus netted more than $458,000 at the launch for Freedom Campaign held May 22 at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica. More than 450 guests joined in support of Operation Exodus for Soviet Jews immigrating to Israel. The campaign is chaired by Irwin Field. Dr. Robert Meth is co-chair.

* Wellness Community-South Bay Cities’ first annual Invitational Golf Tournament raised more than $35,000 April 22 at Palos Verdes Country Club. Friends of the Wellness Community sponsored the event. The community provides psychological services and support for people with cancer and their families. David Peters and Ken McKenzie chaired the tournament.
