A Jewish cemetery in East Los Angeles was hit by vandals who toppled more than two dozen gravestones, officials said Thursday.

Details of the vandalism were sketchy, but the Sheriff’s Department said it was believed to have occurred late Tuesday night at the Home of Peace Cemetery. The cemetery is one of the oldest in Los Angeles and is owned by the Wilshire Boulevard Temple.

Tom Tuvim, general manager of the cemetery at 4334 Whittier Blvd., said more than 24 tombstones were knocked down and that some anti-Semitic graffiti was left behind. Citing the nature of the attack, the Sheriff’s Department declined to reveal details of its investigation.
