The best weather of the weekend will be today, according to the National Weather Service in San Diego.

“We will have lots of sunshine after the low clouds burn off, but the low clouds will last a lot longer and the temperatures will nudge down a bit over the weekend,” forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said.

San Diego is under the influence of a weak high pressure system today, but the front will give way to low pressure that will allow more clouds to come ashore, Shigehara said.

But the overcast skies are typical for June, he said. May and June are the gloomiest months of the year, with San Diego receiving 58% of the possible sunshine in May and 57% in June.

“It would be peculiar if we had a lot of sunshine,” Shigehara said.

At the beaches, temperatures will range from 63 to 68 today, dipping down to 61 to 66 Saturday and 59 to 65 Sunday, Shigehara said. The surf is at 2 to 3 feet, and the ocean temperature is 63 degrees.

Coastal temperatures are expected to reach 68 to 74 today. As the clouds roll in, readings will drop to 67 to 72 Saturday and 65 to 70 Sunday, according to the forecast. Nighttime lows are expected to drop to 52 to 58.

Inland area temperatures will top out at 75 to 83 today, falling to 73 to 80 by Saturday and 70 to 78 Sunday, Shigehara said. He said nights will dip to 48 to 55.

In the mountains, a high of 73 to 78 is expected today, nudging down to 70 to 76 over the weekend. Nighttime lows will hover at 40 to 50 degrees, he said.

The mercury in the deserts will soar to 98 to 105 today and then inch down to 97 to 103 over the weekend, Shigehara said. Nights will be a comfortable 62 to 70, Shigehara said.

No flash floods, common to the deserts in the summer, are expected this weekend. However, the subtropic area close to the Equator that brews the storms is becoming very active, Shigehara said.
