Soccer Fans in Chile Turn Violent; 10 Die

Soccer fans celebrating the championship victory of a Santiago, Chile, team turned violent Thursday, and 10 people were reported killed and 128 injured in fights and traffic accidents.

Police said 188 people were detained during the disorders, which lasted until dawn in several areas of the capital city of 4.5 million.

Thousands took to the streets to celebrate Colo Colo’s 3-0 victory over defending champion Olimpia of Paraguay to win the Liberators Cup, the South American championship. It was the first Chilean team to win the 31-year-old tournament.

Fans marched through Santiago waving Chilean and Colo Colo flags. Others rode in processions of cars, and police said sporadic violence broke out when some fans started throwing rocks at passing vehicles.
