Caltrans to Install New Ramp Meters

Share

In an effort to address increasing traffic congestion, the use of ramp meters along three San Diego County freeways will be expanded by the end of this year, Caltrans announced Friday.

The on-ramps to southbound Interstate 5 from Encinitas Boulevard to Via de la Valle will all have ramp meters installed by July 9. The meter controlling traffic flow from the Via de la Valle on-ramp will be installed by June 18, in time for the Del Mar Fair, Caltrans said.

Meters for the southbound Interstate 15 on-ramps at Rancho Bernardo Road, Camino del Norte and Poway Road will all be in operation by the end of the year, Caltrans said.

Additional meters will also be placed on Interstate 805. Interstates 5, 8, 15 and 805, and California 94 now have ramp meters.

Ramp metering monitors a freeway’s traffic volume and speed, breaking up large groups of cars from entering the freeway simultaneously.

In another highway-related announcement, Caltrans said bids for seven state highway improvements from Vista to National City totaling $4.5 million were opened earlier this week.

The projects include replacement of concrete pavement on I-5, reconstruction of highway shoulders in El Cajon, realignment of curves in Ramona, the widening of California 78 in Vista, and the construction of a median barrier near Lemon Grove.
