A man was killed Saturday when the motorcycle he was driving crashed head-on with a pickup truck along California 78 in the Santa Ysabel area of East County, authorities said. The driver of the pickup was seriously injured.

The dead man, who was wearing a helmet, was identified as Carl James Adams, 41, of Chatsworth. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident occurred at 5:35 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said, when a westbound pickup truck crossed over the double yellow lines at a curve and collided with the motorcycle.

The incident took place about 1.2 miles east of the junction with California 79, authorities said.

The driver of the pickup, Robert L. Henderson, 38, of Santa Ysabel, was taken to Palomar Medical Center with multiple injuries. His condition was upgraded to good on Sunday, a nursing supervisor said.

There was no word on what prompted the pickup to cross into the oncoming lanes, or on the speed of the two vehicles. The CHP was investigating.
