COUNTYWIDE : 5% Fees to Be Levied on Trash Haulers

Share

Trash collection companies that operate in the county’s unincorporated areas will be assessed a 5% fee on their annual receipts, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors unanimously decided Tuesday.

The fee, which will raise about $424,000 annually, will be used to pay for such state-mandated projects as a curbside recycling program and hazardous waste and recycling collection centers.

Kay Martin, director of the county Solid Waste Management District, said the fee will probably be passed on to the 25,000 households in the county’s unincorporated areas.

She said she did not know how many businesses will be affected.

The fee goes into effect July 18.

State law requires counties and cities to draft a plan to increase recycling and reduce by 25% the amount of trash generated by 1995 and by 50% by the year 2000. Failure to meet the requirements can result in fines of up to $10,000 a day.
