First on His Block: Action-adventure star Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to be the first civilian to own a Humvee, the Army’s rugged, jeep-like vehicle. Although civilian sales have been considered, the Humvee still is exclusively for the military--with the exception of Schwarzenegger, who is getting a custom-built model. About 20,000 Humvees--short for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle--were shipped to the Persian Gulf and won high marks for ruggedness and durability in combat. The government pays $26,000 for the basic vehicle. Schwarzenegger’s price for the first private Humvee was not disclosed.
