Boy, 3, Accidentally Shoots Self in Head
A 3-year-old boy was in extremely critical condition Saturday after accidentally shooting himself while his family was visiting overnight at a friend’s home in the Florence area, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said.
Mauricio and Teresa Padilla of Lynwood were awakened by the sound of a gunshot and discovered their son Jesus with a bullet wound to the head, Deputy Mary Landreth said. The child is under treatment at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center.
The gun has been removed from the home at 1938 1/2 E. 76th St., Landreth said.
The incident marked the second time in two weeks in the county that the combination of children and guns resulted in tragedy. On June 7, 3-year-old Heather Hacket of Hacienda Heights was killed in her family’s garage while playing with her brother and neighborhood friends after one of the youngsters discovered a loaded shotgun.
