Lest your Nebraska readers be confused by Sheehan’s explanation of the Bernini fountain in the Piazza Navona, let me clarify. The four rivers depicted in the fountain are the Danube (Europe), the Ganges (Asia), the Nile (Africa) and the Rio de la Plata in South America, not the Platte. Even if the Platte had been known to Europeans of Bernini’s day, which I doubt, it is certainly not as remarkable a symbol for the entire continent of the Americas as is the Rio de la Plata when it reaches at the open sea off Argentina.
