ORANGE : Student Wins Award for Naming Mascot

Share

The city’s recycling mascot--a cheerful, talking orange--has a new name.

Steven Wells, a fifth-grader at Prospect Elementary School, has been named the winner in a city contest to name the recycling mascot. Wells will be awarded a $200 U.S. Savings Bond for creating the title “Happy SORT: Save Orange-Recycle Trash.”

The mascot and the winning name will appear on all city recycling literature.

Mayor Gene Beyer awarded certificates to Wells and other finalists at last week’s City Council meeting. The name contest, created to help educate young people on the importance of recycling, attracted submissions from 14 elementary schools.

The finalists, one from each grade level, were Bryce Reyes, a kindergartner from Prospect Elementary; Wendy An Nguyen, a first-grader from Handy Elementary; Britton Powell, second grade, Chapman Hills; Sarah Vincent, third grade, Prospect Elementary; Adam Lynn, fourth grade, California Elementary, and Michaelyn Possemato, a sixth-grade student at Fletcher Elementary. Each will receive a $50 U.S. savings bond.
