NEWPORT BEACH : Cable Channel Keeps Residents Tuned In

Share

For a half-hour lesson in the correct method of battery and pesticide disposal, local residents can turn on cable Channel 3.

Residents can use the public-access channel to take a closer look at Mayor Phil Sansone, who sometimes draws chuckles from audiences at City Council meetings with his colorful comments. Or they can check out news on weekend social activities.

Under their new contracts with the city, Comcast and Community Cablevision last week began airing local programs produced by city staff.

Deputy City Manager Ken Delino said programming will include instructional tapes on programs such as recycling, hazardous waste disposal and water conservation. Neighborhood Watch announcements, City Council meeting interviews with city officials, public hearings and meetings of Newport-Mesa Unified School District board will be aired 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We want to be the channel people in Newport Beach turn on, the kind of channel you just kind of turn on when you get dressed in the morning,” Delino said.

Officials are hoping that the city’s use of the public-access channel will help keep residents abreast of what’s going on around town.

“It’s real hard for us to get information out . . . (but) everybody watches TV, at least an hour a day,” Delino said.
