ANAHEIM : Hearing Is Tonight on Budget Proposal
The City Council will hold a final public hearing tonight on its $544-million budget for the coming year that includes rate increases for city services, employee layoffs, a new tax on utilities and the elimination of some community services.
Facing the lowest sales tax revenues in a decade, the city initially projected a $20-million shortfall. After a number cuts of employees and programs, the deficit was reduced to about $10 million, which the city hopes to recover with the new utility tax.
At most, 187 city employees, including 37 sworn police officers, may be cut from the budget. The budget also calls for eliminating programs such as day care, day camp, teen clubs and some adult sports teams. About 1,600 people participated in those programs this year.
