MOORPARK : Forum Planned on Gang-Related Crime

Share

Moorpark residents can attend a public forum tonight on gang activity in the city, which, along with other areas in the county, is experiencing an increasing number of gang-related problems.

The forum will be held at 7 p.m. in the Community Center, 799 Moorpark Ave., said Susan Cauldwell, assistant to City Manager Steve Kueny. The purpose of the meeting is for residents to learn more about gang activity in the city and to offer suggestions on how to curtail it, Cauldwell said.

The meeting is being sponsored by a committee formed by the Moorpark City Council earlier this year. The committee includes representatives from the city, the school board, the Chamber of Commerce and the Boys & Girls Club.

City and law enforcement officials said that, while there has not been an increase in gang violence in Moorpark, graffiti and gang-related vandalism is on the rise. “We’re at the cusp of an emerging problem,” Cauldwell said. “We just want to tackle it before it gets out of hand.”

The forum will be presided over by Steve Kingsford, assistant county superintendent of schools. A Spanish translator will also be present.

A second gang forum has been scheduled for July 16.
