From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The state Parole Board refused to release “onion field” killer Gregory Powell after hearing pleas to keep him locked up from the 91-year-old mother of the police officer Powell shot in 1963. “I’m not here to seek revenge,” a frail Crissie Campbell told the parole board as she fought back tears. “I am here because I’m concerned about our system of justice. My son survived the Korean War, but . . . as a young police officer he was gunned down, brutally murdered in his own country.” The three-member panel voted unanimously to deny parole for two years for Powell, who is serving a life term. It was the fifth time the board has denied freedom for Powell.
