The driver of a speeding vehicle was killed, and his passenger was seriously injured Tuesday near Dulzura when the car in which they were riding hit an embankment, officials said.

According to a California Highway Patrol dispatcher, the unidentified driver was driving at high speed on California 94 at Summit Road when he was unable to negotiate a turn. The vehicle struck the embankment and overturned, flinging the driver into the road about 40 feet away. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dulzura firefighters extricated the passenger, David Elliot, 40, from the vehicle. He was flown by Life Flight to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was being treated Tuesday night for major injuries.
