Schools : Librarians, Safety Officers Cut From Norwalk Budget
The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District board this week adopted a $79.5-million budget for 1991-92, eliminating three part-time librarian positions, two safety officers and a dispatcher. But the board retained 10 guidance counselors for elementary pupils.
Overall spending was cut by more than 4%, with the district spending $2 million less than in the current fiscal year.
Board President Salvador Ambriz said the cuts were necessary because of uncertainty about how much money will be received from the state.
The school district saved an estimated $64,000 by eliminating the high school librarian positions. But the board rejected a staff proposal to eliminate 10 counseling positions. The recommendation had drawn criticism, and prompted the Norwalk City Council last week to offer $183,000 to help keep the counselors. The district declined the city’s offer and decided to allocate school money to keep the positions.
