IRVINE : Schools to Adopt Policy on Vandalism
Even though vandals haven’t been plaguing Irvine schools, the school board will adopt a policy to handle students caught damaging school property.
Under the policy, parents in the Irvine Unified School District could be billed for vandalism caused by their students.
The students could have their grades, diplomas and transcripts withheld if the damage isn’t paid for.
The policy merely puts into words the practice already in place among school officials, said Jerry Rayl, assistant to Supt. David E. Brown.
“We make every effort to recoup the money any time there’s vandalism and we know who did it,” Rayl said Thursday.
The vandalism policy is expected to go before the school board on July 2 for final approval.
No increase in vandalism prompted the policy, Rayl said.
Some school administrators just believed that the policy needed to be formalized, he said.
“We’ve been blessed in this district,” Rayl said. “Our kids have not been destroying our schools.”
