*** NATALIE COLE “Unforgettable” Elektra

Share

Elektra has kicked out the jams for Natalie Cole’s label debut. Starting with a big concept--her interpretations of 22 Nat King Cole classics--the production leaves few musicians unemployed, with a huge orchestral ensemble and arrangements by Michel Legrand, Johnny Mandel and Ralph Burns, among others.

Perhaps predictably, Cole has no better luck with such pop novelties as “L-O-V-E” and “Non Dimenticar” than her father did. On the real classics--”Paper Moon,” “Lush Life” and “The Very Thought of You,” as well as the inevitable “Nature Boy” and “Too Young”--she clicks into a sound and a groove that recall and occasionally expand upon Nat Cole’s memorable performances.

But the track that will surely bring sentimental tears to Cole aficionados is the title song, in which electronic wizardry allows father and daughter to sing a sweetly soulful duet.
