South Pasadena : Budget Cuts Considered
The City Council, postponing adoption of the 1991-92 budget, last week scheduled a public workshop to take a closer look at proposed cuts in police and fire services to overcome a $1.3-million deficit.
The proposed $9.7-million budget is the second half of a two-year spending plan approved by the council in June, 1990.
City Manager John Bernardi said smaller-than-expected revenues forced him to modify the plan. “It’s getting more and more difficult to balance the budget,” he told the council Wednesday.
His proposed revisions include eliminating three police positions--a dispatcher, a police officer and a detective--and one Fire Department position--a battalion chief--originally authorized for 1991-92.
The city also would postpone replacing four police cars and a paramedic ambulance for at least a year.
The workshop is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 15 in the council chambers.
