A Simi Valley man who was barbecuing on his patio accidentally set fire to his apartment building Saturday night, officials said.

No one was injured, and the blaze at 1528 Patricia Ave. was brought under control within 13 minutes, said Paula Aliano, dispatcher for the Ventura County Fire Department.

Juan Yribe was barbecuing on his second-story patio at about 6:45 p.m. when one of the briquettes from his gas barbecue fell to the patio floor, Aliano said.

The patio floor was made of wood and caught fire, Aliano said. “The fire burned through the bottom of the floor patio to the complex below him.”

Only the patios of Yribe’s apartment and his neighbor’s below him caught fire, Aliano said. The apartments were not burned, she said.

Structure loss was about $20,000 and content loss was about $10,000, Aliano said.
