Sockers Might Get Local Bid
A Socker source confirmed a report Saturday that Oscar Ancira Sr. and his son, Oscar Ancira Jr., are one of two groups ready to formally petition the MSL with plans to buy the financially troubled team.
The Anciras own a local frozen foods company, Delimex. They have met with Socker Coach Ron Newman and Commissioner Earl Foreman several times since June 3, when owner Ron Fowler announced he would close the doors at the end of the month.
A third group is also interested, but is not as far along as the Anciras and the other group, according to the source.
Foreman left San Diego Saturday, but made it known he thinks the Sockers’ ownership question can be resolved later this week. He may be hoping that an application of ownership is filed sooner, however.
Trouble still exists in Tacoma, where the Stars were given until Monday to sell 4,000 season tickets. They have sold 1,300.
In Dallas, Gordon Jago met on Saturday with a potential owner of an expansion team which would replace the defunct Sidekicks.
Both Keith Weller, Tacoma coach, and Jago are hoping a positive announcement from San Diego will help their causes.
