AIDS Clinic Will Begin Accepting Patients July 1

A new clinic for AIDS patients at County-USC Medical Center is scheduled to begin receiving patients July 1, according to hospital officials. The new facility will help reduce the waiting period for AIDS patients to about five weeks, down from 21 weeks a year ago, officials said.

Robert Frangenberg, director of the county’s AIDS program office, said the facility will be able to handle about 4,200 patient visits per month--or 800 fewer than it was designed for.

Frangenberg said there is not enough money in the proposed county budget to handle the additional 800 visits. Overall, he said, the county’s health care system will have handled about 54,000 visits at AIDS outpatient clinics at the end of the fiscal year June 30. Next year, it will be able to handle about 100,000 visits.
