NEWPORT BEACH : Council Approves Recycling-Fee Hike
The City Council this week approved rate hikes that will double residents’ recycling fees, tack on $25 in charges for emergency medical responses that involve hazardous materials, and charge up to $8,000 for permits to store toxic chemicals.
Effective Monday, recycling fees will jump from 74 cents to $1.54 per month, paramedic calls involving hazardous materials will increase to $125 and fees for toxic chemicals permits will range from $100 to $8,000, depending on the amount and type of material.
City Manager Robert L. Wynn said the recycling and hazardous materials programs saw the largest increases because original fees were estimates based on the projected number of homes served.
Still, the city’s refuse service allowed officials to keep refuse fees lower than those of most other cities in the county, Wynn said.
The city adjusts user fees roughly every three years to reflect changes in the consumer price index. The increases should bring in an additional $437,560 in revenue, Wynn said.
