PRO VOLLEYBALL CAMP PENDLETON OPEN : Silva’s Outburst Costs Her Team a Match

Jackie Silva’s temper sometimes gets out of hand, and it proved costly Saturday in the second round of the $40,000 Camp Pendleton Open pro beach volleyball tournament at Club del Beach.

With the score tied, 12-12, against second-seeded Gail Castro and Lori Kotas, Silva was whistled for a foot fault on a serve. The head official overruled the line judge, who said Silva hadn’t stepped over the line.

Silva was warned with a yellow card when she complained about the call to the official.

Silva and her partner, Rita Crockett-Royster of Costa Mesa, fell behind, 14-13, when Silva began complaining to the official again. She was slapped with a red card, thus losing a point and costing her team the match.

Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. rules state that a red-card penalty carries a $50 fine for infractions such as profanity, hanging on the net or kicking the ball.

Silva argued the call with tournament officials, but to no avail.

“I didn’t do anything,” Silva said. “I called timeout, then I put my hand up in the air. Then he (the official) said, ‘I’m going to give you a red card.’

“I think he was just trying to make a name for himself. It cost us the match.”

Silva, the tour’s all-time leading money winner, and Crockett-Royster, a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team, will have to battle through the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament. They entered the 32-team tournament seeded 15th.

“We’re going to have to play harder now,” Silva said. “And we’re going to have to keep our cool.”

Castro and Kotas advanced to the quarterfinals, where they lost to seventh-seeded Kelly Van Winden and Charlotte Mitchel, 15-13. Van Winden and Mitchel will meet third-seeded Elaine Roque and Janice Opalinski-Harrer of San Juan Capistrano in today’s winners’ bracket semifinals.

Twelfth-seeded Lori Biller and Patty Dodd scored one of the biggest upsets of the day, beating fourth-seeded Liz Masakayan and Linda Carrillo, 15-6, in the quarterfinals. Biller, a former standout at La Quinta High School, had an ace down the line for match point.

Biller and Dodd will meet top-seeded Angela Rock and Karolyn Kirby in the other winners’ bracket semifinal.

A heavy northwesterly wind throughout the day plagued most of the matches. ESPN commentator and player Kathy Gregory, after watching a Crockett-Royster jump serve blow out of bounds, yelled, “Hey Rita, rate the wind from one to 10.”

Crockett-Royster held up both hands, signifying a 10 as the worst possible conditions.

Rock and Kirby, who have won eight of the first 11 tournaments this year, are closing in on the season record of 11 victories set by Silva and Dodd in 1989. There are six tournaments scheduled after the Camp Pendleton event.

Kirby also is closing in on Silva, her former partner, on the tour’s all-time money winners chart. Kirby, who has won $44,340 this season, has $96,356 in career winnings while Silva leads with $102,954.

Kirby entered the season $46,138 behind Silva, but gained ground when Silva was resting an injured shoulder.

Cammy Ciarelli of Huntington Beach and Diane Pestolesi of Costa Mesa, seeded ninth, lost to eighth-seeded Gayle Stammer and Alison Johnson, 16-14, in the second round. Ciarelli and Pestolesi are in their first full season on the tour.
