Nine motorists were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving late Saturday and early Sunday at a checkpoint on Coast Highway, police said.

The checkpoint was in operation for southbound traffic from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. at Coast Highway and Three Arch Bay. Among the 1,726 vehicles that passed through, 518 drivers were given brochures about driving under the influence of alcohol and 16 were given field sobriety tests, police said.

Five men and four women were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, Police Sgt. Greg Bartz said.

In contrast with the checkpoint, regular patrol officers made one arrest elsewhere in Laguna Beach of Saturday night on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

“The Laguna Beach Police Department is extremely pleased with the results of this checkpoint and will continue to implement checkpoints at other locations within the city,” Bartz said.
