Menotti’s Birthday Present: At the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, tonight festival founder Gian Carlo Menotti will receive the third Jean Cocteau International Style Award. The presentation will follow the opening of a new production of Mozart’s early intermezzo “Apollo et Hyacinthus,” staged by Menotti. The award, presented by the California-based Severin Wunderman Museum, honors the composer’s “diversity of talent and fidelity to a vision.” Menotti’s recent spat with other Spoleto festival, South Carolina-based Spoleto U.S.A., remains unresolved. He threatened to quit as artistic director of the festival, claiming his authority was undermined. Menotti will be 80 on Sunday.
