A 27-year-old security guard was found dead in his vehicle on a La Jolla street Thursday, and authorities said they suspect an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound as the cause of death.

The identity of the security guard, an employee of Strategic Security of San Diego, was not released late Thursday. San Diego Police Sgt. Mike Gibbs said the victim was found about 3:30 p.m. in his car, which was parked in the 9600 block of La Jolla Farms Road.

The guard had apparently been shot once in the abdomen. He was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m., authorities said.

“A weapon was recovered a short distance away,” Gibbs said. “At this time, we are calling it an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Gibbs said the security company was apparently under contract by the Salk Institute but could not say whether the guard was patrolling a site of the cancer research center at the time of the death.

Officials from Strategic Security did not return calls late Thursday.

An autopsy is planned, authorities said.
