NEWPORT BEACH : Panel to Investigate Historical Sites

Share

A committee of city officials and residents has been established to pinpoint and preserve historical spots in one of the county’s oldest cities.

Councilwoman Evelyn R. Hart will chair the ad hoc historical preservation committee, which will work with the city’s Historical Society to research local historical sites. In addition, the committee will act as an advisory body to the City Council and Planning Commission, making recommendations for historical landmarks to be included in the city’s Register of Historical Property.

To date, there are five sites on the register: the Balboa Pavilion, Rendezvous Ballroom, Jolly Roger Restaurant, the former site of the Bank of Balboa and Bank of America, and the Balboa Inn.

Councilman John Hedges, vice chairman of the committee, said the group will first inventory the city for historical sites, then decide on a method of preservation.

The committee plans to ask for citizens to write or call with potential sites, Hedges said. He said he expects to find most sites near Balboa Island, the birthplace of the city.
