Car Rental Problems

Share

As I read the letter “Auto Advice” in the July 23 Travel Section, I thought the paper had gotten wind of my sad story except that the airport I was in wasn’t Orly but Kastrup in Copenhagen; the rental company wasn’t Budget but Pitzner Car Rental; the misleading CDW phrase wasn’t suppression de franchise but selrisikoforsikring. But the theme rang true: “Being ripped off (either accidentally or fraudulently) by a European car rental for CDW.” And after a year my problem is far from resolved.

Like the letter writer George Towner, I had, could prove, did show the agent at Pitzner proof of CDW coverage through my Corestates Gold Visa. Like Towner, I relied on the agent to show me the box to check. The explanation for CDW was the tiniest print on the page and misleading. It literally said “yes” the signer did want to waive the collision damage insurance.

Follow George Towner’s advice and spell out the desired insurance in writing on the printed contract and don’t check and initial any box.
