Poway School District Fined Over Report

Share

The state Fair Political Practices Commission levied a $1,500 fine against the Poway Unified School District Wednesday, citing an annual district report that featured photographs and biographies of elected school board members.

Susan Bobrow, an attorney for the FPPC, said the district and Supt. Robert Reeves mailed out about 36,000 copies of the 1988-89 annual report that violated provisions of the Political Reform Act.

Bobrow said the report, approved by Reeves, contained photographs, names and biographies of five elected school board members that gave “an unfair advantage to these political candidates” by having their name and picture appear in a mass mailing paid for with public funds.

A spokeswoman for the school district declined comment, referring calls to the district’s attorney, Jerry Conrady. Conrady was unavailable for comment.

Bobrow said, however, that Poway school officials were notified of the fine Tuesday and have already paid the $1,500.
