RAMS : Team Welcomes Rookies, Some Who May Wind Up as Starters

Share

After spending nearly every waking moment since the end of last season trying to erase the memories, the Rams begin a new and, they hope, improved season today when rookies and a few veterans report for a five-day voluntary camp at Rams Park.

The non-contact camp will run through Tuesday, a day before training camp is scheduled to open at UC Irvine.

Unsigned players can attend voluntary camps. Players without contracts cannot attend training camp.

And unlike most of the past years of Coach John Robinson’s tenure, many of these young players can play large roles in the upcoming season. As many as eight or nine starting jobs are open, and this mini-camp is the chance for younger players to move into position to challenge for those spots.

Wednesday, the Rams agreed to terms with sixth-round selection Neal Fort, reducing their number of unsigned draft picks to six. All 11 selections, including unsigned No. 1 pick Todd Lyght, are expected to participate in the camp along with about 10 players learning new defensive coordinator Jeff Fisher’s system.

Fort is a 279-pound tackle from Brigham Young.
