Director of Public Employee Union Fired

The staff director of Los Angeles County’s largest public employee union has been fired by her executive board. The board of 50,000-member Service Employees International Union’s Local 660 voted by a narrow margin to terminate general manager Sharon Grimpe Correll.

The local’s assistant general manager, Anelle Grajeda, confirmed the firing but would not comment on the reasons for it. Other union sources, however, said that a faction of the executive board had been critical of Correll for failing to aggressively pursue minority issues.

Two months ago, Correll complained in a memo that several members of the local’s executive board had been unfairly criticizing her as a “racist.” She said the remarks were made at a reception for the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
