Garcia Flattens Goff in Second Round

Heavyweight boxer Alex Garcia of San Fernando ran his record to 21-1 Thursday night with a second-round knockout of Jerry Goff of Mississippi.

The scheduled 10-round bout took place in a cow pasture in Gardnerville, Nev. Garcia, 29, was fighting for the first time since turning down a purse in June of $500,000 to fight George Foreman.

He earned a reported $8,000 for his easy night against Goff.

Garcia, 221 1/2, landed heavy punches at will in the opening round and staggered Goff late in the round with an unintentional head butt.

In the second round, Garcia began doing damage with his fists. He hurt Goff, 27, with a right hand midway through the round and 30 seconds later began a furious, 15-punch flurry that left Goff, 208, helpless on the ropes.

Referee Vic Drakulich jumped between the fighters and halted the bout. It was Garcia’s 16th knockout. Goff is 18-2.
