Director of Grove Will Be Missed

Share

It is difficult to express the extent of my disappointment at the resignation of Thomas Bradac, artistic director of the Grove Shakespeare Festival (“Shakespeare Festival’s Artistic Director Quits” by Zan Dubin, July 3). It has been my perception that he has been the driving force behind the increasing professionalism and diversity of offerings that have been made available, and also for the widespread public recognition of the theater as a rich artistic resource in the county.

I have lived in Garden Grove since 1955 and remember well the epithet leveled from other parts of the county: Garbage Grove. That image has receded, due in large measure, I believe, to the quality of excellence in performance offered by the theater.

I have shuddered at the self-defeating and absurd attitudes of City Council members who created a brouhaha with their comments about the “highbrow” nature of artistic offerings relative to their “inferior” constituencies.

Now it seems the Shakespeare Festival board itself is the enemy. Its dissatisfaction with plays that are offered and their artistic director is not reflected by this subscriber and a group of friends who come from as far away as Carlsbad to enjoy the theater season in Garden Grove.
