A Los Angeles police sergeant who is charged in the beating of Rodney G. King is expected to testify as a government witness against five sheriff’s deputies and an LAPD officer accused of beating, framing and stealing from narcotics suspects, a federal prosecutor said Friday.

Sgt. Stacey C. Koon is on the list of more than 100 government witnesses scheduled to take the stand against former members of a narcotics investigation team known as the Southwest Crew, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Mike Emmick.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies J.C. Miller, Robert Tolmaire, John Edner, Roger Garcia and Ed Jamison were indicted last year along with LAPD Officer Stephen Polak. Jury selection for their trial is set to begin July 29. Koon was indicted by a county grand jury on charges of excessive force, assault and filing a false police report in connection with the March 3 beating of King. Three other LAPD officers also were indicted.
