NATION IN BRIEF : COLORADO : Workers Flee Gas Leak at Brewery

Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Leaking ammonia fumes forced evacuation of the Adolph Coors Co. brewery in Golden, Colo. About 40 people were taken to hospitals. It was the second ammonia leak at the brewery in 10 days. A forklift hit a 4-inch pipe carrying ammonia, which is used by Coors as a refrigerant, said Sgt. Gary Grainger of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. Hospital officials said the injured were suffering from minor symptoms of respiratory distress from the pungent gas. On July 3, 35 people were taken to hospitals and 950 people were evacuated from the brewery complex after ammonia fumes got into the ventilation system. Most of the injured in that incident were tourists and tour guides. That leak apparently was caused by a valve that had been left open outside the building.
