Abortion Option

Representatives Bill Lowery (R-San Diego) and Randy Cunningham (R-San Diego) showed political courage in casting their vote for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services appropriations bill. It contained the Porter Amendment, which permits doctors to discuss all legal options, including abortion, with a pregnant patient. They were among five of the 29 California Republicans to do so.

One hopes that their votes reflect their understanding of the medical ethics involved. Physicians must have the freedom to discuss all medical options with their patients, even if President Bush and the majority of the Supreme Court disapprove of one of them.

If the President vetoes the bill because of the Porter Amendment, I hope they will show the same courage and help to override the veto.
